Kamloops and Area Fishing Tips

Spring Fishing Tips

Ice-off finds trout moving into shallow, oxygen rich water. Anchoring at the drop off and cast toward old weed and reed beds. Try micro leech, bloodworm, scud and chironomid patterns hung below an indicator. After turn over look for large chironomid hatches, cast to where you see fish moving. The South Thompson below Kamloops Lake opens May 1 for fly fishing [fly only catch and release] and can produce great fishing in low runoff years following a pink salmon peak run the previous Fall. Try fry, stone nymph and dry caddis patterns.

Summer Fishing Tips

Summer fishing can be good when it gets hot just go to large lakes or higher elevation lakes to get better fishing success. This is the time of year when you will need all your flies, because there are so many hatches a good variety of flies is essential. This is the time of year when attractor patterns can really help the fish count. Watch for moving fish and try fishing in the morning and evening.

Fall Fishing Tips

There are two fall techniques you should try in shallow water. One is of course hanging a shrimp or leech under an indicator and just let it hang waiting for a strike. The other is taking an intermediate line ( a true Intermediate) and work your shrimp or leech back to the boat with a hand twist retrieve. Either way you can get good results and sometimes you have to use both.

Wind drift can help a great deal but be sure to keep your line tight. Make sure you cast with large loops so you avoid wind knots and hooking yourself. All you need is a slow hand twist retrieve to attract fish.
